Healthcare Informatics Takes Home the Gold ASHPE Award for Top Ten Tech Trends Report

Healthcare Informatics has once again been recognized by the American Society for Healthcare Publication Editors (ASHPE) for demonstrating writing excellence in two of the society’s editorial categories for 2017.

New York, NY | May 07, 2017

Healthcare Informatics won twice in ASHPE’s 2017 Awards Competition, which honors writing excellence and insightful reporting among U.S. healthcare publications. For the fourth consecutive year, Healthcare Informatics won an award for its signature “Top Ten Tech Trends” special report, this time taking home the Gold Award in the Best Special Report/Section Category. Healthcare Informatics also won a Bronze Award in the Best Case History Category for Editor-in-Chief Mark Hagland’s story on the first-place winning team in the 2016 Innovator Awards program, UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Healthcare Informatics’ Top Ten Tech Trends report comes out every year in the spring and gives readers insight into how their worlds could be shaped in the next several years as it relates to health IT. It is a widely quoted issue, and one of the best-read every year. The 2016 report covered an extensive array of health IT’s most pressing issues: from FHIR; to MACRA/MIPS; to cybersecurity; to physician documentation reform; and much more. All of the 2016 Top Ten Tech Trend stories can be read in full here: https://www.healthcare-informatics.com/magazine-issue/marchapril-2016

Mark Hagland’s cover story on UT Southwestern Medical Center, the first-place winning team in the 2016 Innovator Awards Program, told a fascinating story how the patient care organization, via its Ambulatory Quality Outcomes Project, has been able to turbocharge quality improvement in physician practice. Indeed, UT Southwestern is blazing the trail for its colleagues nationwide, showing them what is possible when the right vision, strategy, planning, execution, IT, and analytics, are combined into successful initiatives.

Speaking of the news of the Gold Award in the Best Special Report/Special Section category, Healthcare Informatics Editor-in-Chief Mark Hagland said, “It is deeply gratifying for all of us on the editorial team at Healthcare Informatics to receive this honor from the American Society of Healthcare Publication Editors, and we appreciate very much this recognition. This is actually the fourth award overall (the team has also received two silver awards) that we’ve received for our ‘Top Ten Tech Trends’ cover story package, which provides our readers—healthcare and healthcare IT senior leaders in hospitals, medical groups, and health systems—a broad overview of the most important trends shaping our industry in the present moment. We are gratified to know that this cover story package, one of our signature editorial offerings each year, is being recognized for its editorial quality. We remain passionately committed to helping our readers navigate the winds of change in an industry undergoing dramatic, transformational change.”

Healthcare Informatics Releases Exclusive Physician Survey Results—Most Practices Still Need MACRA Help

New York, NY, March 28, 2017. Healthcare Informatics surveyed 2,045 U.S. physicians in SERMO across various specialties—revealing that most practices still need MACRA help, with many still stuck in fee-for-service environments.

Just one in five practices (20 percent) with 15 physicians or fewer and approximately one in four practices (28 percent) with 16 to 50 physicians report that they are “ready to go” to meet the core requirements under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA), according to an exclusive survey conducted by Healthcare Informatics and SERMO.

The goal of the joint research was to gauge providers’ readiness for MACRA, a newly-implemented law that will fundamentally change how eligible Medicare physicians will be reimbursed, starting with an outcomes-based Quality Payment Program that kicked off in January. SERMO, founded in 2005, is a global social network for doctors—a virtual doctors’ lounge where doctors anonymously talk real-world medicine and medical crowdsource with their peers. For this specific survey, 2,045 U.S. physicians in SERMO across various specialties participated.

For the survey, 60 percent of respondents were in practices sized 15 physicians or fewer; 16 percent were in practices with 16 to 50 physicians; 15 percent were in practices with more than 100 physicians; and the remaining 9 percent were in practices with 51 to 100 doctors.

It should come as no surprise that the smaller practices feel less prepared for MACRA. Of those with 15 physicians or fewer, 80 percent said they either needed help with MACRA; or that they were not prepared at all. That unprepared/needing help number dropped to 72 percent for practices with 16 to 50 physicians, while for practices with more than 100 physicians, nearly half (46 percent) said they were fully ready to go with just 16 percent in this practice size range saying they were not at all prepared. Irrespective to practice size, 70 percent of respondents said they either needed help with MACRA, or that they were not prepared at all.

On the release of these survey results, Healthcare Informatics Editor-in-Chief Mark Hagland said, “This is a critical juncture for healthcare providers as the healthcare system shifts from being primarily fee-for-service payment-driven to value-based payment-driven. It’s important for healthcare IT leaders to get a sense of where clinicians and medical organizations are in terms of understanding the implications of new payment mandates. The results of this survey confirm that many physicians, particularly those in smaller practices, remain woefully unprepared for the new requirements facing them under the MACRA law. It’s been excellent to work with SERMO to uncover the levels of awareness and preparedness for MACRA amongst physicians in private practice.”

The complete survey results are available for download on the Healthcare Informatics website: Survey Results Report

Grandma may not be the first suspect when painkillers vanish from the medicine cabinet.

But many elderly Americans are fighting often-hidden battles with prescription drug abuse, a Florida addiction specialist cautioned Thursday in Pittsburgh. John Dyben suggested nearly 2.9 million older adults nationwide may face the problem, a figure that fits into federal estimates on overall substance abuse among those at least 60 years old.

“The reality is that it’s happening a lot,” said Mr. Dyben, director of older adult treatment services at the Hanley Center in West Palm Beach. The facility is among few residential programs in the United States that specialize in substance abuse care for the elderly, whose addictions can worsen pre-existing health conditions, he said.

Mr. Dyben delivered the warning to about 350 people at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square, where a two-day conference on the opioid crisis is being held. Cleveland-based Vendome Healthcare Media pulled together the event, whose attendees include a cross-section of counselors, therapists and doctors from across the area. Speakers on Thursday put an emphasis on strategies for slashing overuse of narcotics. More than 14,000 people died in 2014 from overdoses involving prescription forms of the drugs, such as oxycodone and hydrocodone, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

PG Special Report: OVERDOSED — How doctors wrote the script for an epidemic

Recovery ”programs aren’t as friendly as we think they are,” said Peter F. Luongo, executive director at the Downtown-based Institute for Research, Education and Training in Addictions. He said specialists should give a sense of hope to recovering addicts, who can face deadly relapses once when they leave treatment.

Likewise, the help shouldn’t follow a ”cookie-cutter” model that supplies identical care to each patient, said Thomas M. Baier, a senior executive director at JEVS Human Services in Philadelphia. He said care can “be whatever it needs to be” — as long as it works.

“We’re talking about human beings here,” said Mr. Baier, who oversees methadone clinics. “There are too, too many variables.”

As for older patients, Mr. Dyben said conversational approaches to screening can help health care workers identify those with substance abuse problems. Nearly 12 million Medicare beneficiaries received at least one prescription for an opioid painkiller last year, according to a federal report released this week.

Cementing Its Dedication to Innovation, Healthcare Informatics Launches Insightful, Product-Level Leadership Series

New York, NY, June 22, 2016. Healthcare Informatics—the most comprehensive and widely circulated publication on healthcare information technologies since 1984—recently released its highly regarded Healthcare Informatics 100, the anchor element to its year-long celebration of product innovation and leadership.  This year, the Healthcare Informatics 100 includes product segment breakouts, revenue charts, and video interviews of the company’s top executives.

To further acknowledge those companies leading the industry, Healthcare Informatics is now releasing the top vendors in each of the seven (7) highly critical product segments, including:

Financial Information Systems; Clinical Information Systems; Data Analytics; Data Management; Data Security; Data Exchange; and Consulting Services.

Over the next several days, Healthcare Informatics will be revealing its top 5 companies—based on percentage of total health IT revenue—within the aforementioned categories. This data, along with the content that accompanies it, gives readers a greater sense of the latest market trends within each of these respective product categories.

“We are delighted to be able to provide an additional layer of nuance to the data and information that we had already been offering to our readers with the Healthcare Informatics 100,” says Mark Hagland, Editor-in-Chief of Healthcare Informatics. “The editors of Healthcare Informatics are committed to helping our readers optimally understand the healthcare IT vendor market and its complexity.”

Rich Tomko, Vice President and Managing Director for Healthcare Informatics, states, “By gaining deeper insight into the revenue numbers submitted, we are better able to identify which companies and leaders are driving technological innovation, at scale, in each of the product segments developing in the U.S. healthcare industry.  Further, as the year advances, we are excited to continually highlight the thought leaders at these companies in order to help our readers understand how these companies see the industry and specifically their product segments evolving.”

About Healthcare Informatics 100:

For more than 20 years, Healthcare Informatics has compiled The Healthcare Informatics 100, a complete look at the top 100 revenue-earning companies in the industry, eligible to any company that can identify HIT-based revenues. To formulate the list, the Healthcare Informatics editorial staff works closely with outside industry consultants. Sales figures are submitted, compiled, and reviewed so as to ensure that the deserving companies are included in the list. Each year, companies submit over a three-month span that involves significant research and data management.

With its finger on the pulse of the most significant trends currently impacting the health IT landscape, Healthcare Informatics is committed to recognizing the expert thought leaders who are propelling their companies to the top of the market. Many of The Healthcare Informatics 100 company listings feature videos of vendor executives answering questions about today’s most significant developments. As Ferguson Anniversary Approaches, Behavioral Healthcare Response Takes Center Stage

Media Interviews Available at National Conference Next Week in St. Louis

New York, N.Y., July 30th, 2015—The National Conference on Addiction Disorders has organized a panel of local experts to explore how individual behavioral healthcare providers can be a catalyst for healing when communities are in turmoil.

We have all watched as Baltimore, Ferguson, New York City, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and other cities across the country reacted to the deaths of Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, and others.  During the sometimes violent protests, often lost in the national discussion is the long-term impact of trauma on communities.

In this significant plenary panel discussion—The Provider's Role in Addressing Community Trauma—taking place Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the historic St. Louis Union Station Hotel, an expert panel of local and national behavioral healthcare leaders will address important—and often neglected—issues, specially exploring how individual behavioral healthcare providers can be a catalyst for healing when communities are in turmoil.

Moderated by Gary Enos, Editor of Addiction Professional, this discussion will draw upon the experience and insight of its remarkable panel of local experts, including: Dr. Marva Robinson, Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Preston & Associates Psychology Firm, LLC (St. Louis, MO); Rev. F. Willis Johnson Jr., D. Min., Wellspring Church (Ferguson, MO); and Dr. Christi M. Griffin, Founder and President, The Ethics Project (St. Louis, MO).  Among other key points, the panel will focus on understanding: the long-term impact of trauma on communities; how an individual provider can be involved in healing communities; and how behavioral healthcare providers can be a catalyst for change in a recovery-oriented system of care.

Dominion Diagnostics is the Title Sponsor of this year's National Conference on Addiction Disorders. Dominion Diagnostics is also the Thought Leadership Partner for the 2015 Addiction Professional Panel Series, a nationwide series of expert panel events in 27 locations across the country. Due to a scheduling conflict, Richie Supa will not be able to speak at this year’s NCAD conference; however a lifelong friend of Richie’s, Ricky Byrd, a 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee and world renowned guitarist will be the celebrity keynote.

In his keynote session—taking place Saturday, August 1, 2015 at the historic St. Louis Union Station Hotel—Ricky will relate and share his own recovery journey: what he has learned in 27 years of sobriety as a rock star; how he has applied his experiences to everyday life; what he has learned giving back with his guitar and music and how the music sessions at Sunrise Detox helped changed his life.  Ricky has also joined Richie Supa, who runs the Creative Recovery program at Recovery Unplugged Treatment Center, in sharing his story with their clients.

Known for the power chords that came to define Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ platinum cover of I Love Rock & Roll, Ricky Byrd—who has achieved 27 years of sobriety and has toured with numerous rock bands—will be delivering a keynote address entitled, Rockin for Recovery: A Man and His Guitar, at this year’s National Conference on Addiction Disorders and Behavioral Healthcare Leadership Summit. He’s also played with legends like The Who’s Roger Daltrey, Mott the Hoople singer, Ian Hunter, longtime Springsteen cohort, Southside Johnny, and many more artists.

Sober since 1987, Byrd had wrestled with addictions that led to a collapsed lung in 1983 and a dangerously low weight—a live or die situation. In the past 10 years Ricky got the opportunity to play with Richie Supa and a few other friends touring treatment centers and detox facilities. Ricky saw the reactions that the music was getting and Ricky went on to start the Clean Getaway Band and now works at Sunrise Detox. Ricky still collaborates with Richie Supa who recently sponsored an event put together by The Face the Music Foundation, which included live music, art projects, and family fun to raise awareness for substance abuse. Ricky and Richie were joined by friend artists: Randi Fishenfeld/ Clarence Clemons, and Kasim Sultan of Blue Oyster Cult.

Long-Term Living Announces Eliza Jennings Senior Care Winner of 2013 OPTIMA Award

Eliza Jennings Wins Annual Award for Implementation of SAIDO Learning Program

NEW YORK (Release Date) – Long-Term Living is pleased to announce the Eliza Jennings Senior Care Network as the winner of the 2014 OPTIMA Award for their implementation of the SAIDO Learning program. SAIDO Learning is a drug-free program developed in Japan to improve the quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and reduce their overall required levels of care.

Eliza Jennings implemented the program’s sole U.S.-based trial in May 2011 at the organization’s main skilled nursing site in Lakewood, Ohio. “We started seeing results literally within the first week,” said president and CEO, Deborah Hiller. “I could see that the program was not only totally consistent with person-centered care, it could drive it.”

SAIDO Learning reduces and even reverses effects of cognition loss by stimulating the prefrontal cortex of the brain through simple reading, writing, and arithmetic exercises. By spending 30 minutes a day on highly targeted brain-exercising sessions, residents are able to perform other tasks more easily for the remainder of the day.

On August 12, 2013, Eliza Jennings received approval to serve as the first training/licensing center for the first SAIDO program licensee site within the United States.

You can read more about Eliza Jennings, SAIDO Learning, and view a video of the program in action as part of Long-Term Living’s coverage of the 2013 OPTIMA Award winners at http://www.ltlmagazine.com/SAIDO.

About the OPTIMA Award

Since 1996, the annual Long-Term Living OPTIMA Award has honored long-term care communities that enact proactive projects to enhance resident care and resident quality of life. The OPTIMA Award winner is selected by a five-judge panel of experts from the long-term care community, using a double-blind entry judging process that is operated by a third-party Award Coordinator. No one from Long-Term Living or its parent company, Vendome Group, is involved in the judging process.

Experts discuss the implications of legalizing or decriminalizing recreational marijuana use

NEW YORK / AUGUST 22, 2013 / -- A panel of experts will discuss the implications of legalizing or decriminalizing recreational marijuana use in Orange County, CA, on September 24. The engaging debate will be part of the National Conference on Addiction Disorders at the Anaheim Marriott, September 21-25.

In 2012, Colorado and Washington became the first states to adopt voter-approved initiatives to legalize possession of small amounts of marijuana and to regulate the drug similar to the regulation of alcohol. Are similar initiatives coming to other states, and what are the implications for marijuana use trends in communities and for addiction treatment programs? Panelists on both sides of the legalization issue, including those who have worked directly on marijuana legalization and medical marijuana debates at the state and national levels, will discuss what it would mean to change current marijuana prohibition policies.

Panelists include:

  • Ben Cort, Board Member of Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana); Business Development Team Member, Center for Dependency, Rehabilitation and Recovery (CeDAR) in Colorado. Cort played a large role in the ultimately unsuccessful effort to defeat Colorado’s Amendment 64 that legalized recreational marijuana use.

  • Amanda Reiman, California Policy Manager, Drug Policy Alliance. Reiman served as the first chairwoman of the Medical Cannabis Commission for the city of Berkeley, California, and has consulted with various cities and states on the development of medical marijuana policy.

  • Kevin Sabet, Director, Drug Policy Institute and Assistant Professor, University of Florida College of Medicine, Division of Addiction Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, President, Policy Solutions Group, Inc. From 2009 to 2011,  Sabet served in the Obama Administration as Senior Advisor at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).

The discussion will be moderated by Addiction Professional magazine Editor-in-Chief Gary Enos, the country’s longest-serving journalist in the addiction treatment field.

Complimentary media passes are available in advance. Contact Nadine Harris-Daly at 212-812-1419 or nharris-daly@vendomegrp.com. Pre-event interviews with Addiction Professional Publisher Doug Edwards, Editor-in-Chief Gary Enos, or panelists are available.

NARR partners with Addiction Professional; continues strategic role with NCAD

NEW YORK (February 7, 2012) – Vendome Group announces that the National Association of Recovery Residences (NARR) is partnering with Addiction Professional. The magazine and its recently redesigned Web site, www.addictionpro.com, will serve as a forum for NARR members to share recovery principles and practice standards related to high-quality recovery residences. In addition, NARR will continue its strategic partnership with Vendome on the National Conference on Addiction Disorders (NCAD; http://www.addictionpro.com/ncad-conference/national-conference-addiction-disorders-2012,) being held in Orlando September 28-October 2.

“We are delighted to be collaborating with NARR,” says Mark Fried, Vendome executive vice president. “This partnership fits perfectly with our mission to share what’s working throughout the entire spectrum of addiction recovery services.”

“NARR is thrilled to partner with Addiction Professional to have the opportunity to contribute and educate. Recovery residences are a vital part of the support continuum as our field shifts from an acute care model to recovery management,” says Beth Fisher, NARR president. “We look forward to increasing visibility for an area of addiction recovery services that has historically ‘flown under the radar.’ There are many, many quality recovery residence operations that adhere to standards and professional practice, yet it is the sub-standard outfits that tend to get press attention. We are grateful for the foresight of Vendome in providing a forum for best practice and shared experience for all levels of recovery residences.”

Fisher, who is on Addiction Professional’s editorial board, was featured on the cover of the May/June 2010 issue of Addiction Professional (http://www.addictionpro.com/article/raising-bar-recovery-residences), and currently blogs at http://www.addictionpro.com/contributors/beth-fisher.

1New York, May 27, 2011 -  Healthcare Informatics magazine announces the 2011 Healthcare Informatics 100, a ranking of the 100 vendors with the highest revenues derived from healthcare IT products and services earned in the U.S. Based on revenue information from 2010, this year’s listing provides readers with a unique information resource and financial overview of vendors active in the healthcare IT market. The Healthcare Informatics 100 is being published in the June issue of Healthcare Informatics, as well as online at http://www.healthcare-informatics.com/hci100.

The top five companies for 2011 are McKesson Technology Solutions (Alpharetta, Ga.), Dell Inc. (Round Rock, Tex.), CareFusion (San Diego, Calif.), Philips Healthcare (Andover, Mass.), and Cerner Corporation (Kansas City, Mo.). In 2010, the top five slots were filled by McKesson, Dell, CareFusion, GE Healthcare (Chalfont St. Giles, U.K.), and Cerner.

“We are proud to release this year’s Healthcare Informatics 100, which offers a distinctive service to our industry, and is uniquely referenced by professionals throughout the field every year,” says Mark Hagland, editor-in-chief of Healthcare Informatics. “We are pleased both with the participation of hundreds of vendor companies in the Healthcare Informatics100 process, and with the rigorous and tireless work of our colleagues at Porter Research and ST Advisors.”

Most of the corporate revenues listed are self-reported. However, to ensure accuracy and compile as comprehensive a list as possible, Healthcare Informatics editors collaborated with the Atlanta-based Porter Research and the Evanston, Ill.-based ST Advisors for essential research and analysis. Benjamin Rooks, Principal at ST Advisors, notes, “As a member of the magazine editorial board, I’ve long viewed the HCI 100 as a seminal industry data source and, as such, I’ve been delighted to once again participate in helping to ensure its accuracy and completeness.”

Industry veteran Porter Research President Cynthia Porter adds, “The healthcare IT industry has seen an amazing amount of activity this year—growth, consolidation, mergers, acquisitions. You name it, the industry has experienced it. The Healthcare Informatics 100 certainly reflects the enthusiasm and energy demonstrably abundant across our industry. As Porter Research has helped compile this list over the past few years, it has been interesting to see companies on the list grow via innovation and strategic business foresight, as well as new up and comers make bigger and bigger waves.”

Healthcare Informatics has compiled the Healthcare Informatics 100, available at http://www.healthcare-informatics.com/hci100, for more than 20 years. The magazine is published by the Vendome Group, LLC, and based in New York.
