Universal Design for Senior Living

Presented by: Beverly Brandon



Does your building's design and interior features assist your seniors in daily living activities? Aging in Place design and accessibility features in a senior community are critical to allow seniors to be as independent as possible for as long as possible. This session will highlight these features and give you the tools to assess you own community. Identifying barriers and eliminating them can be an effective way to enrich the lives of your residents. This session will also assist those communities who are considering accreditation by CARF/CCAC's who require communities to identify their barriers and establish a procedure to eliminate them. During this session attendees will be ask to evaluate spaces and identify if those spaces have barriers or not using their checklist provided. This same checklist of aging in place design features will assist attendees in assessing their own community.

 

Learning Objectives

  • Know which design features allow aging in place;

  • Identify barriers in your community that limit residents' independence and dignity;

  • Provide barrier checklist tool to assist those communities considering CARF/CCAC




About the Speaker:


Beverly Brandon


Nationally recognized as an expert on designing for seniors, Ms. Brandon's 30 years of designing senior living communities includes numerous Continuing Care Retirement Communities, Senior Communities, Assisted Living Residences, Senior Housing, and Health Care Centers. More recently, she has been involved with existing senior communities who are expanding their programs to include a wellness program, more independent living units to attract the younger, more active senior and modifying their health care to embrace culture change.


Ms. Brandon is a Certified Aging Services Professional (CASP), a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and is a LEED candidate.
