Detailed Description

The Boomer Wave Challenge webinar series, deals with the Boomer effect in older adult addiction presents a challenge in numbers, and presents a complex profile impacting treatment and recovery. The "Young Older Adult" addict still requires slower detox and treatment. A new model of older adult treatment is compared to treatment for those 62+. Boomer treatment considers a different set of factors: unique drug use histories; generational values and life-shaping experiences; and a high prevalence of dual diagnosis with serious physiological and psychiatric complications. Correct diagnosis of specific dual diagnosis is essential, and requires longer stabilization. Individualized care is holistic and medically based. After stabilization, therapies that encourage Emotional Sobriety and engage the patient may include Dialectical Behavior Therapy, especially in personality disorders diagnoses. We are learning through direct research how neurological effects in hormonal changes may be factors in late onset addiction and relapse among older adults. Recent studies also show that neuroplasticity can be increased in middle age. These neurobiological studies lead to therapies that can reduce cravings and build cognition as well as creativity. The new brain fitness movement has potential among Boomers and those 62+, within a holistic treatment plan that includes continuing care and is rooted in the Twelve Step philosophy.
