Research Methods for Evidence-Based Design is a webinar presentation of the research methods used to measure the impact of building design on patients and professionals in healthcare facilities.

Evidence-based healthcare design is simply the integration of the best possible research evidence with design experience, clinical expertise, and knowledge of the needs of patients, families, and professionals in the healthcare environment. The evidence is drawn from the systematic exploration of relevant studies and determining their application to the current design problem.

This presentation will discuss research methods that can be used to measure the effect of building design on people and organizations. A conceptual model will be introduced that can be used as a framework for project-related research. Participants will also learn how identify research variables of interest and critique research reported in the literature. The presentation will include actual reported research and case studies as examples of the research methods and will address appropriate research questions to be considered for healthcare projects.

Webinar Learning Objectives

  • Define the importance of evidence-based design for health facility design
  • Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and indicate which is most appropriate
  • Identify ways to use the web or research databases to find evidence-based articles for use in research projects or in design
  • Critique existing articles about designs to determine if they are evidence-based and how they can be used in practice
  • Develop a research question and hypothesis for their projects
  • Determine appropriate environmental, organizational performance, patient, and staff variables that can be investigated
  • Identify organizations that can assist in project-related research
