Older Healthcare Buildings: Should They be Reused? is a webinar presentation that tackles the question of whether or not to rehabilitate an existing or historical healthcare building and the best approaches to take during evaluation.

Architects and owners often face the question of whether or not an existing building on a hospital campus can be re-used. Sorting through the pros and cons of such issues is a complex process that involves both critical thinking and sensitivity to address the following issues:

  • The benefits of rehabilitation on a historic structure.
  • The importance of carefully examining whether an existing building can accommodate intended functions as well as modern requirements.
  • The importance of Facility Master Planning as a vital tool in developing solutions that allow buildings of historic interest to remain intact.

Reskinning an existing hospital building may be a viable and even desirable option, in some cases where the existing structure may be sound, but the exterior facade is unusable. Conversely the facade may be a valuable piece of architectural history, but the superstructure is unusable. This presentation will examine both situations.

Webinar Learning Objectives

  • Describe the optimal approach to be taken when reusing an older healthcare building.
  • Describe the first step decisions to be made in developing the approach for reusing an existing structure
  • Assess the defining, but not limiting factors prevalent in rehabilitating older healthcare buildings.
