Evidence-Based Design Meets Patient Safety is a webinar presentation that examines Safety by Design principles and presents case studies of their application and outcomes.


This session will present innovative and practical facility design concepts that incorporate significant patient safety and quality-of-care improvements. Participants will understand and learn Safe by Design principles as developed by the National Learning Lab in 2002. The four areas of recommendation that addressed include:


  • Latent Conditions
  • Active Failures
  • Facility Process Recommendations
  • Safety Culture Recommendations



Multiple case studies will be presented, including St. Joseph's Community Hospital, Boca Raton Community Hospital, University of Minnesota-Fairview Children's Hospital, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Outcomes of these applications on quality and safety will be discussed, including data from St. Joseph Community Hospital's AHRQ grant.
