Disaster Planning: Restoring Normalcy in the Wake of a Natural Disaster examines the importance of disaster planning for hospitals and other healthcare organizations. In the wake of natural disasters, hospitals and healthcare organizations still need employees to come to work to serve patients, residents and the community. When Hurricane Katrina hit, Ochsner Health System was able to deal with the complexities of the aftermath as well as restore some normalcy to its employees' lives—a task that would up taking a much higher priority than hospital leadership could ever have imagined before post-Katrina flooding turned life in New Orleans upside down.

With a continuously updated disaster plan and an integrated workforce management solution in place, Ochsner met its objectives through business continuity plans that ensured its employees were working when they were needed most. And the proof lies in the fact that Ochsner never shut down in the post-Katrina nightmare that hit New Orleans.

This program illustrates importance of a well-tested disaster plan in place and the critical step of communicating that plan to your workforce. Randal Langford, assistant vice president of physician compensation at Ochsner, provides participants with real-world, dramatic examples of what can go wrong and how IT and Healthcare leaders have to be flexible and always learning from disasters. The slide presentation for this program includes extensive checklists and other information that will take days off your process of developing disaster plans of your own while also giving you a real-world, in-the-trenches view of what happens when you have to put a disaster plan to work.
