Desperately Seeking Safety: Creating Surgical Environments That Do No Harm is a webinar presentation that explores the use of evidence-based design for building and renovation of surgical environments.

The world is in the middle of the biggest hospital construction boom in a half-century. There remains a large disconnect between designers and users with the result that little formal knowledge is implemented in preventing patient harm by better building design. This disconnect is particularly apparent in designing perioperative settings (i.e., pre-op, operating room, recovery room, intensive care unit). Two expert speakers will review the evidence-based design and describe initiatives underway to design safer perioperative environments.

Webinar Learning Objectives

  • Consider the effect of designing the physical surgical environment to deliver safe patient care.
  • Review the more recent knowledge related to the surgical environment and patient safety.
  • Discuss the attributes of various quantitative and qualitative research methods as they related to measuring the impact of the perioperative environment.
  • Learn to incorporate safe design principles into the design and construction of surgical hospitals and health care facilities.
