Culture change is a pervasive concept in leading-edge skilled nursing residential care environments. It builds on each person's strengths by creating a physical and programmatic environment that reflects individual choices, preferences, autonomy and flexibility. NewBridge on the Charles Health Center (located in Dedham, Massachusetts) incorporates culture change concepts in its operations, environmental design, and programmatic organization to achieve healthy living outcomes.

Participants will learn:

  • About NewBridge on the Charles' approach to culture change in its leading-edge skilled nursing residential care environment
  • How the design process incorporated interdisciplinary frontline care staff to evolve the programmatic, operational and design goals
  • How culture change empowers staff to interact with and change the physical and operational environment through the use of technology, flexible work environments and operational policies
  • About transforming the physical setting of long term care into one of a home through the use of private rooms, small group households and environmental cues

About the Speaker:

Martin Siefering
Principal

Martin has been active in the culture change movement in long term care - leading pioneering projects for clients such as Hebrew SeniorLife in Boston, Massachusetts, and The Jewish Home and Hospital in New York, New York. He has worked with clients to establish design processes based on a multi-disciplinary team structure that empowers staff and breaks through departmental boundaries of traditional roles while integrating the wisdom of front line staff. Martin spoke at the spring 2005 CANPHA conference on the team based planning process utilized by Hebrew SeniorLife. He has also recently written on this topic for publication on AAHSA's website in February, 2006.

His work with Jewish sponsors of long-term care began 16 years ago with work on the Montifiore Home in Beachwood, Ohio. Since then he has worked with Menorah Park in Beachwood, Ohio; Morse Geriatric in West Palm Beach, Florida; Hebrew SeniorLife in Roslindale, Massachusetts; and the Jewish Home and Hospital Life Care System in New York City. His experience with these clients has given him a unique understanding of the methods of infusing Jewish values into the facilities, especially important is the issue of Kosher food and its impact on the decentralized household dining environment.

Martin has also been a leader in the integration of technology into the senior living environment. He has managed Perkins Eastman's Information Technology Systems and staff for over 10 years and brings this knowledge as well as his understanding of the connection between technology and business processes to the project. He is passionate about finding technology that can make life simpler rather than complicating it.
