ER One has matured into the next phase, redefining the mission that reaches far beyond the ED. This presentation highlights the innovations that have been born from the initial ER One concept. Emphasis will focus on four basic initiatives- the future of the ER One Institute, patient and staff feedback from the first ER One construction project- the Bridge to ER One, preliminary observational outcomes of the "Positive Distraction" interventions implemented in the ED waiting room, and the Institute's next design intervention.

In looking ahead to the future of the ER One Institute, discussion will include M12, the new home for the Institute, as well as its purpose to continue the development of innovations in health care building sciences with a solid evidence basis. Additionally, the Institute's collaboration with key partners, and focus on improving operational efficiency, safety, cost reduction, and improved patient outcomes will be discussed, with examples of each.

The feedback from patients and staff in their experience in the Bridge to ER One will look at flow, efficiency and ergonomics, while the ED waiting room observations will investigate the influence of strategically placed positive distractions, including kinetic lighting, interactive video, and electronic messaging. These observations look to explore the effect of positive distractions on the perception of patient /visitor wait time and anxiety.

And finally, in discussing the ER One Institute's next design intervention- ergonomics and safety in flooring systems, and energy recovery potential in health care facilities- the team of presenters, which includes key players in the concept development, research and construction efforts of ER One, will describe how health care providers and design firms can use these visionary interventions within their own facilities to improve outcomes.

About the Speakers:

Ella Franklin, RN, CRC
is a nurse researcher with more than 25 years experience in the healthcare industry. Currently serving as the director of External Partnership Relations, Research and Development for the MedStar Institute for Innovation/ ER One in Washington D.C., she leads teams exploring the complex relationships between the physical environment and patient/ staff outcomes. After earning her Bachelor of Science from Georgetown University and training at the National Institute for Nursing Research (NIH) she served as a clinical trial coordinator and held numerous clinical leadership positions in a range of specialties including: critical care, occupational health, infection control and ambulatory surgery.

Ms. Franklin is the research coordinator for the Bridge to ER One, a prototype building project that serves as a test-bed for new technologies and innovative design concepts as well as for solutions developed to enhance infection control and surge capacity. This facility simultaneously operates as a daily-use emergency department that exceeds 80,000 visits annually.

In addition, Ms. Franklin is involved in various public health efforts. She sits on the user-advisory board of CDC's Project BioSense and is a member of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative helping to speed the healthcare sector towards environmental sustainability.
